Exploring Salone del Mobile in Milano: A Journey through Alcova

Let's step outside the box and explore how artists from around the world are reshaping design across all surfaces. Our next destination: Salone del Mobile in Milano. This was my first visit since 2017, and I approached it with a fresh perspective, eager to navigate the world of design once again. There was so much to see that I've decided to break it down into three parts.

Our first stop was mind-blowing! The event, Alcova, is a showcase of products, materials, and living environments. It took place in the spectacular former abattoir of Porta Vittoria, a massive abandoned complex with a rich history. Built between 1912 and 1914, it served as the municipal slaughterhouse and a vital logistics hub in the city. Though decommissioned between 1995 and 2005, the raw structure of this space was a work of art in itself. I found myself drawn to the industrial decay of this environment.

Art + Loom New Collection 2023

Our journey began with a visit to the Miami-based rug brand Art + Loom and interior designer Bea Pernia, who collaborated to present "The Art of Formation" at the Alcova design fair. The installation was inspired by the beauty of geological formations. Art + Loom unveiled four new hand-knotted rugs influenced by tectonic plate shifts, rock formations, and shattered slate. Bea Pernia showcased sculptural furniture made from marble and wood, drawing inspiration from biophilia.

Among the hundreds of artists, a common theme emerged—sustainability. Alcova prioritizes works that go beyond aesthetics to question the way things are done. Some projects on display focus on processes or materials, considering the entire life cycle of an object, from its creation to its eventual use.

Some of my favorites from the show included designer Zuzanna Skurka, who showcased Bricks Textiles, a material researched by Natural Material Studio. This material is made from soil and clay, and when fired, it transforms into a versatile architectural construction base—a soft, flexible textile.

Another highlight was Sensbiom 2, presented by Crafting Plastic and DumoLab Research. This installation was mesmerizing, not just for its color tones but also for the way it moved and interacted with light. Sensbiom 2 represents the future, where objects help humans reconnect with the planet using environmentally interactive materials.

I could go on, but the bottom line is: don't miss this show and keep an eye out for its appearance at this year's Art Basel 2023. Alcova Miami is scheduled to take place between December 6th and 10th, 2023, at the Selina Gold Dust Motel and the former Emancipator Boatyard.
